Dynamic-Role-ing
By Darryl Howrie
"What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us."—Ralph Waldo Emerson
The Dynamic-role-ing model really offers some unique properties about NLP and its recent evolutions resulting increasing congruence i.e. using NLP on itself more and more. This approach is in opposition to the NLP belief “map is not the territory”. But try as we may, we tend to be believing of this constant (our current reality) deception – e.g. keep telling yourself your map is not your “territory” and you’ll likely come undone and end up with some contagious new mental disorder. (From here I might refer to the “mapping” part in the statement ‘map is not the territory’ as a process or a verb like the term “meaning making” or “meanings” etc.) Meaning making is so much apart of our entire neurological make up and experience we simply without questioning too much all continue gluing-up our maps to these experiences and realities. We couldn’t really believe anything that has not come in through our 5 senses anyway right? I mean where does reality start inside or out?
True: map is not the territory (music is not the score menu is not the meal) but we make is so, we matrix it so, this outside-in approach is only a dirty mechanism on the real truth. It is not that we tend to life and living from the outside world in but that we tend to create more from within (a world) for the outer. I think there has been some emphasis in the media about such movements in psychology, the quantum sciences, Neuro-sciences and cutting edge genetics. *
Modeling success
As I began modeling excellence some frame of mind violations are obvious:
- to make a difference = distorted cause effect violation
- be the best = distorted ‘best’ violation might be better as best-ing
- unstoppable momentum = generalization violation – how would you know it’s unstoppable if no one ever saw it stopped etc
Specifically I noticed there was a particular violation among the highly, ridiculously successful. Each of them identified with (glued up their map to some territory) something. In general semantics Korzybski says “be careful of those small words of identity” ‘is’ and ‘are’ and ‘am’. Nothing could be further from the truth than the idea ‘that we are an accountant, dad, teacher or even inspiration. So the previous nlp training said to you don’t identify with things – now we say map is the territory, you are the ‘one’, you are giant, be the xyz….it is time to celebrate the alter-ego and amplify it.
Beyonce - sasha ferocious
Sean Combs - p. diddy etc
Donald Trump - the general
Tupac Shakur - makaveli (after Nicolo Machiavelli)
Brian Hugh Warner - Marilyn Manson
Anthony Robbins - the giant
So the previous nlp training said to you don’t identify with things – now we say map is the territory, you are the ‘one’, you are giant, be the xyz….it is time to celebrate the alter-ego and amplify it.
Personal development version
Firstly, what are the steps to running this pattern or meta-pattern? I always liked the idea that within the same person resides both the problems and the solution. This simple belief has led me to heal hundreds of people. We are then acting as the link or connection between the resource and problem. Well, here we can learn to run our own brain and do this inner healing.
1. Select a problem. Now this could be an emotion or attitude, it could be something more behavioral and action oriented, but either way, this is unwanted and unneeded. Sometimes rather than just a state this step can become a third person movie of the unwanted behavior. (thus it is a dissociated picture of one’s self, doing the attitude or behavior. As the viewer, there should be little or no emotion.) What do you name this part of you?
2. Create a solution state/image, this is a reverse on step one. Again if working neuro-linguistically see the self image of a person who is naturally unstoppable, brilliant, robustly optimistic, abundantly fair and response-able. If you can name this state or self image just like in step one. If working neuro-semantically then simply re-access the frame of mind/emotion/state or above named qualities and their names.
· So far we have some attitude or behavior we would like to change, represented as a semantic state or self-image.
· We now also have an answer or solution. We have the opposite experience in abundance. Again if possible name this part of you?
3. Now the question we must ask is what has just happened? A coach might say “We could sit and think about negative thoughts but instead you created a positive thought and named it, and now I ask what is implied by what you did? What is implied by the fact that you took your attention off the negative and placed it on the positive?” (coach person A until they arrive at something like “what is implied is that I control my thoughts/emotions etc”)
4. But now we ask a similar question building a new level of awareness about the overall process up until now. I would like you to take your time for a minute here, thinking metaphorically. You actually just played a much larger ROLE in the context of your life and your life’s overall direction. This much higher perhaps even values-based-ROLE above all the thinking you do it is more like a META-ROLE and it really says something about you as a person. As far as a metaphor is concerned what role did you just play in your life by doing this proactive, optimistic and congruent thinking? What does this thinking-excellence say about you as a person? (allow some time for person A to ponder and come up with a metaphor)
5. Associate fully into this frame-metaphor and then invite for the unconscious executive level of your mind to take control of this frame so as to generalize into your alter-ego and then future pace.
But will dynamic-role-ing stop here no, it doesn’t have to remain a complete pattern but can compliment others. You could insert role at the end of any pattern e.g. the swish, in stead of the standard post hypnotic suggestion (future pace) and in neuro-semanitcs instead of using a meta-state we simply invite for their role or a new role and ask what does all this change say about you as a person? new resources/metaphor/role (awareness of enhancing but inner long held self-metaphors is akin to narrative therapy too).
Results
Yes people have found greatness and simplicity in this method. Some found great power and control, so far some alter egos have been…:
· The navigator of my thoughts
· The inner coach
· The Sheppard of my thinking
· The controller of my thoughts etc
· …and there will be many others….
Summary
So there we have it; a negative emotion, then a positive one, then one level of awareness about it and then a second level of awareness to solidify the over-arching role or alter-ego.
